What is Galvanizing

Galvanizing protects steel with a layer of zinc. Zinc creates a barrier against the environment and also helps protect steel even with minor local surface damage.

For smaller, precise components, electro-galvanizing is often used, providing a thinner and visually uniform layer. Larger structures or parts for more demanding outdoor environments may require hot-dip galvanizing, which has different thickness, appearance, and dimensional implications.

The appropriate process is selected based on dimensions, material, required lifespan, appearance, and environment. For electro-galvanized zinc, the final appearance and protection are further influenced by passivation and potential sealing.

The coating changes the dimensions of threads and precise fits. Important surfaces must be marked on the drawing and prepared with clearance, masked, or checked after treatment, depending on the process.
